The purchase of Amazon MGM could take much more than planned. The sources of information say that the Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation “in depth” on the purchase of Amazon’s MGM on the potential for antitrust abuse. Officials are concerned about the potential of the acquisition of “illegally promoting” Amazon’s influence on offering goods and services, not just the content it produces.
MGM has decreased to comment. We have asked for Amazon.
A probe would not be completely unexpected. The FTC department and justice agreed on a review of the deal when the Great Technology critic of Lina Khan was appointed as president of the FTC. Amazon has been waiting for a repression, and was as far as to ask for the recusing of Khan in the coming cases. She is not expected to be agache from the MGM research.
This will not necessarily result in the FTC blocks the agreement. However, it could impose conditions on the purchase, and could easily delay an agreement completed for several months. It took more than a year for Google to finish the acquisition of Fitbit, which Amazon may have to wait for a similar amount of time to own MGM, and that is provided, there are no major obstacles.
